MANILA — More than 2,700 residents in Northern and Central Luzon have been evacuated as Super Typhoon Nando continues to intensify, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) said Sunday night.

As of 7:50 p.m., authorities reported 935 families, or 2,777 individuals, had been moved to evacuation centers in the Cordillera Administrative Region (Apayao), Region I (Ilocos Norte), Region II (Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya) and Region III (Aurora).

Cagayan accounted for the highest number with 679 families or 1,975 people evacuated, followed by Aurora with 113 families or 359 individuals, and Apayao with 100 families or 306 residents.

The DILG commended local governments and first responders for their swift action and urged officials to strictly enforce preemptive and mandatory evacuations in areas vulnerable to storm surges, floods and landslides. The agency also reminded local governments to implement liquor bans, enforce the no-sail policy and ensure evacuation centers are stocked with food, water and health supplies.

“Preemptive evacuation is both a duty of government and a responsibility of communities to safeguard lives,” the DILG said in a statement.

The department also called on residents in danger zones and low-lying communities to heed evacuation orders, stressing that “homes and property can be rebuilt, but lives lost can never be replaced.”
