PASIG CITY, Philippines — The Pasig City government has unveiled a prototype for its proposed floating parks, an initiative aimed at creating sustainable open spaces for residents, particularly children and senior citizens.
Mayor Vico Sotto said Saturday that the local government unit tested the concept using a barge, which can be outfitted as a playground, pocket park, garden, or multipurpose area.
The project is part of Pasig’s finalist entry in the Bloomberg Mayors Challenge, an international competition that recognizes innovative urban solutions.
In addition to the floating park, the city’s design includes cantilevered linear park extensions with cisterns underneath to collect rainwater.
Sotto said community consultations are being conducted with barangay officials and residents to gather suggestions and feedback.
He thanked Morning Star for lending the barge, as well as the Philippine Coast Guard, Metro Manila Development Authority, Philippine Association of Flour Millers Inc., and barangay volunteers for their support.
