PUERTO PRINCESA, Philippines — The Puerto Princesa City Water District (PPCWD), Palawan State University and Western Philippines University signed a memorandum of agreement Monday to conduct a socio-economic assessment of communities near the Montible Watershed here.

The agreement was signed Dec. 8, 2025 at the PPCWD Multi-Purpose Hall in Barangay Sta. Monica by General Manager Walter J. Laurel; Dr. Abraham Cea, representing WPU President Dr. Amabel S. Liao; and Atty. Rhodel Magrata, representing PalawanSU President Dr. Ramon M. Docto. The universities pledged full support for the PPCWD program.

The collaboration between the local water utility and the academic sector is part of a Gender and Development Agenda and the Integrated Watershed Management Plan for Montible. It aims to develop interventions and a development plan to ensure a clean, managed and sufficient water supply from the watershed for the future.

According to the PPCWD, the Montible Watershed is a primary water source for Puerto Princesa City and a critical supply during drought seasons.

Protecting the watershed requires engagement with surrounding communities to help them adopt sustainable livelihoods and avoid environmentally destructive practices, officials said.
