Calatagan moves to strengthen lifeguard services with lower training fees

CALATAGAN, Batangas — The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) Batangas chapter met with local tourism officials and raft operators this week to tackle lifeguard renewal and registration in the popular coastal town of Calatagan.

The meeting, led by PRC Batangas chapter administrator Ronald G. Generoso, was attended by representatives from the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) of Calatagan, the municipal tourism office, and the Calatagan Balsa Owners Association.

One of the key agreements was to lower the training fees for lifeguards, making it more affordable for both raft operators and lifeguards themselves. Organizers said the move is expected to encourage more lifeguards to undergo proper training and certification, a critical step in ensuring the safety of tourists flocking to Calatagan’s beaches and floating cottages.

Calatagan, located on Batangas’ western coast, has grown into a major tourist destination in recent years, known for its sandbars and raft cottages locally called balsa.

With visitor numbers climbing, local officials said strengthening lifeguard services has become an urgent priority to prevent water-related accidents and improve emergency response.
