Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental Mayor Jason John Joyce said he has received death threats against him and his family following the exposure of alleged “ghost” flood control projects in the town.
In a Facebook post, Joyce appealed for a bulletproof vehicle so he could safely return to his municipality.
The controversy erupted after a surprise inspection led by Public Works and Highways Secretary Vince Dizon and former ICI adviser and Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong uncovered the questionable projects in Jose Abad Santos.
Dizon earlier said he doubted that the district engineer alone was responsible for the irregularities, insisting others were involved in what he described as the flood control projects scandal in Davao Occidental.
He recommended the filing of charges against the district engineer and others linked to the alleged corruption.
Joyce maintained that he did not receive any kickbacks from the town’s projects, except to clarify issues surrounding the Culaman Bridge, which remained unfinished despite full payment from the Department of Public Works and Highways to the contractor.
He also flagged several incomplete projects in Jose Abad Santos and elsewhere in the province.
While some lauded Joyce for his courage, others criticized him for speaking out only now after a long silence.
